"Lazy American Students"

1. Professor Miller's assement about listening to music, texting, and other electronic distractions is right on. I know based on some students that texting and listening to music during class causes them to not understand or know what is going on around them. I know when I'm home I am easily distracted by music and online websites such as facebook. I believe it is a matter of procrastination that makes some of us so lazy, and the fact that most of it is not interesting to us. Some believe that it isn't even worthy to us to learn most things in school. I think that if teachers made it more interesting than their might be more of interest to do work.

2. I see getting a college education as an opportunity to learn more for your choice of job career and to become experienced for the real world, but I believe most believe it is an opportunity to get a good job, and in some cases looked down upon if you do not attend college. I believe teachers and parents want their children to succeed to become successful people. I know my parents want me to become successful and to do better than they did. My parents even told my brother and I they would work 5 jobs in order to pay off our college tuition.

3. In some classes I believe that teachers are preparing us students to succeed in colleges, but in other classes it seems as though teachers don't care. I have 6 cousins in college, and some are in grad school that have I think prepared me more than some of my classes and teachers. And I as well have visited some colleges that have given a lot better insight and understanding.

4. I want my structure of learning to be more interactive and students should recieve more feedback from teachers on grades. Most teachers I have had do not give us papers back until next term or until we ask for them. Some however don't even bother to give them back at all. I think that the feedback gives us a insight on how we are doing and what we need to work on. Some teachers should structure some material the way colleges do to give us insight, and I do not believe teachers should baby us. That I think will not help us in college.

5. I believe it is important to learn the structure of college and what it might be like. For example setting up some material like college will give us better insight and prepare us for what college will be like.

6. I'm willing to work hard. I'm determined to work hard to get what I want and where I want to be. I've always grown up with my parents instilling it on my brother and I.

Imperialism

1. What nationalistic views were expressed by Cecil Rhodes's "Confessions of Faith?"

Rhodes nationalistic view is he believes the English or Anglo - Saxon race is superior to other races. He believes the Anglo -Saxon (English) race should spread their goodness to other countries by expanding. He states, "...bringing...who uncivilised world under British rule...for the making the Anglo - Saxon race but one Empire." Rhodes also goes on to say that their influence impacts many countries -- the U.S. is only prosperous because they are of the Anglo - Saxon race, and they learned their ways from England. Further on he states, "It is our duty to seize every opportunity of acquiring more territory and we should keep this one idea steadily before our eyes that more territory simply means more of the Anglo - Saxon race more of the best most human, most honourable race the world possess." This statement made in Rhodes's "Confessions of Faith" shows his belief that England must expand in order for the Anglo - Saxon race to eventually dominate the world, and it is best because the Anglo - Saxon race is above all other races.

2. What role did the concept of race - the English or Anglo - Saxon race - play in the arguments of Rhodes?

The role of race in Rhodes's argument was significant. Rhodes used race to defend his answers in argument. He believes the world should one day be of all Anglo - Saxon race because they are superior to other races because of their advancements. He proclaimed that the Anglo - Saxon (English) race is "the best the most human, most honourable race the world possesses." Rhodes feels that because they are superior it allows them to expand and seize other countries. He uses race to defend England's reasons for imperialism.

3. How do Joseph Chamberlain's arguments (from his Foreign & Colonial Speeches) in favor of British expansion compare with those of Rhodes?

Chamberlain's arguments in favor of expansion is more for commerce compared to Rhodes who believes the reason for expansion is because the Anglo - Saxon race is superior. He believes commerce is the sole reason for the empire. That the empire was founded on commerce and was created by commerce, which is the reason why it should be expanded. Commerce is for new markets to created and old ones become more developed which allows empires to prosper. Chamberlain says, "I approve of the continued occupation of Egypt; and for the same reasons I have urged upon this Government, and upon previous Governments, the nevessity for using every legitimate opportunity to extend our influence and control in that great African continent which is now being opened up to civilsation and to commerce..." Chamberlain differs much from Rhodes who solely believes the expansion of the Anglo - Saxon race will benefit others.

4. What, according to Chamberlain, were the economic benefits of British expansion?

The economic benefits of British expainsion is new markets will be created and old one will become more developed. This allows the empire to prosper from the the new and old markets. He believes the navy will be strengthed because of the commerce.

5. How did Chamberlain define the national mission of the "great governing race," the English?

Chamberlain defines the national mission as the findings of the facilities and qualities
in the other countries which makes the the "great governing race." England has brought peace, security, and prosperity.

6. What does the phrase "you cannot make omelettes without breaking eggs," have to do with British imperialism?

The phrase "you cannot make omelettes without breaking eggs" is used to compare Africa's use of barbaric ways, supersitition, and slavery cannot be broken without force.

7. What, according to Karl Pearson in his National Life from the Standpoint of Science, was the "natural history view of mankind?"

The "natural history view of mankind" is of an orgainzed empire that is internally efficienct by making sure their stocks escalate, and that they keep up external efficiency by competing with inferior races, and with equal races by fighting for trade routes, raw materials, and food supply.

8. How did Pearson define the difference between inferior and superior races?

Pearson says that superior races should not coexist with inferior races, and that the superior races should drive out the inferior. He defines superior races as white people and inferior races is the remaining people.

9. What measures did Pearson advocate for keeping the race fit?

Pearson says to maintain being the superior race you must be advanced than the other countries and outrun the other countries for better economy and virtues.

10. How did Pearson portray the effects of the survival of the fittest on international relations?

The superior country will prosper from economic benefits. Those of high intellect and physcial efficiency will be those benefitting.

Recently we posted our preference of projects. I would like to have our project based around 20th century because we have more knowledge and experience because it is more recent and we lived in it.
I really have no preference for topics. I feel that I could be interested in all the topics listed.
I'd prefer to work in a group because I feel that the project would come out better. Their are benefits to working together because you get new and creative ideas to add to your project. You have the option of someone checking your work and it socially you can make new friends or renew old ones.

project preference

This year I would like to work on powerpoints because I think it is more useful. I would like to learn how to use animation. But I would not mind learning about other formats of digital presentation.

Reminiscing September 11th

It has been eight years since the tragic event of 9/11 had occurred. To this day I still remember where I was when it had happened. As I recall where I was, I can still feel the mood of the atmosphere around me. I was living in Randolph at the time, and was in my third grade class with Mrs. Coulter. My teacher also happened to be the assistant principal, and she had left the room all day. So my assistant teacher took over, and was reading an American Diary book to us. You could tell behind that smile she was putting on, something was wrong. Her eyes had given her away. I remember going home that day finding both my parents were home. It was unusual to find my mom home that early because she didn't come home until around 5:00 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. But that day I found her home. My dad had called her and told ehr to come home immediately. In the background I could hear the news. I had heard that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center. I wasn't quite sure what the Twin Towers were, but I realized it was something significant. My parents briefly explained to me what had happened because I was only in third grade and my brother was in first. I remember my mom trying to call my aunt because my uncle works near the Twin Towers. That day had been a day of sitting and waiting to hear what had happened, why it happened, whatwas the damage, and how many people we had lost. That day had left our country shaken for awhile.
Today I feel as though people are starting to forget that tragic day. It's just going to be one of those events that will be written in history books, and that's all. I will forever remember that day because I was alive for. Each year I learn more and more about that day and can honestly say it taken great affect on me. Lucky for me I didn't lost anyone, and for I am very thankful. But on that day every year my heart goes out to the people who did lose someone that was very special to them. We lost many victims, firefighters, and police officers. All innocent and trying their best to save people. They lost their lives because they were being unselfish. They were saving peoples' lives and they died because of it. Most of us take it for granted and become selfish at times. I know I have been selfish at times, and when I think of all those people holding onto their lives and trying to save others, I realize I am very lucky to be healthy and have a healthy family. And I hope people do learn from this. I hope this day will never be forgotten like all the other events written in history books. I know I will never forget.
